Grinding machine for working metal.

Grinding is a working process, removing material in an abrasive way by a grindning machine. Various different grinding machine models are used for working metals, ceramic parts or polymer parts. Here we give you an overview about the available models. Please ask us for the right grinding machine for your application. We can also offer grinding wheels for all these applications.

Grinding machine controlling

Most grinding machines are available with manuel adjustment, NC or CNC controller. NC or CNC stand for Computer Numerical Control. These are common controllers for machine tools. It is a basic task of every numerical control to perform and observe a positioning. "Numeric Control" in general means that an input of numbers into the control leads to a sequence of process steps. All required data for numerical controlled production facilities is given by an information carrier in an encoded way. CNC are often used for separate work pieces, small/medium series and repeating orders.

Round grinding machines

Round grinding of work pieces can be done either by fixing the parts between two pins, vertically and fixed by a chuck, or by centerless round grinding.

Round grinding of work pieces is easiest achieved by fixing the parts between two pins. While rotating, the work piece is ground by the grinding wheel.

In order to grind the work piece circular, it is clamped in a chuck and the grinding head works the parts round. The grinding wheels can be changed similar to a turning center. The grinding wheels are stocked in a magazine. It is also possible to mount the grinding head angular.

Inner round grinding

For inner round grinding, the work piece can be mounted horizontally or vertically. The grinding wheel is inserted and smoothens surface of the parts on the inside.

It is also possible to combines inner and outer round grinding on the same machine.

In order to grind cams or other asymmetric forms on shafts, a round grinding machine can be used also in combination with an additional automation axis and an appropriate controller.

Centerless grinding.

Centreless (centerless) grinding is an OD (outer diameter) grinding process. In difference from other cylindrical processes, where the work piece is held in the grinding machine, while grinding between centers, the workpiece is not mechanically constrained during centreless (centerless) grinding. Therefore the parts to be ground on a centreless (centerless) grinder do not need center holes, drivers or workhead fixtures at the ends. Instead, the workpiece is supported in the grinding machine on its own outer diameter by a workblade and by the regulating wheel. The work piece is rotating between a high speed grinding wheel and a slower speed regulating wheel with a smaller diameter. With centreless (centerless) grinders, a workpiece is supported by a work rest blade and set between a rubber regulating wheel that rotates the workpiece and a rotating grinding wheel.


Throughfeed grinding

In throughfeed grinding or thrufeed grinding, the parts run trough the machine continuously on a blade. Only cylindrical work pieces can be ground this way. The grinding wheel width has to be adapted to the length of the work piece. The diameter of the grinding wheel has to be adapted also to the dimension of the work pieces, the stock removal and the throughput. The parts are rotated by the regulation wheel or feed wheel. The opposite grinding wheel is removing stock until the final diameter of the parts has been reached. The axis of the regulating of feed wheel is not exactly parallel to the axis of the grinding wheel, but little bit tilted. This is causing the movement of the parts on the blade through the grinding machine. The shape of the regulation wheel or feed wheel has to be adapted and the surface therefore is slightly concave.

Grinding of long bars

This grinding method can be used also for long bars. In this case, very precise guidance of the work piece is necessary.

Infeed grinding

Infeed grinding allows also grinding of parts that are not cylindrical. The work piece is inserted in the machine by a robot. Then regulation wheel and grinding wheel a driven closer together and grinding starts. The wheels can be profiled in order to grind complex surfaces.

Shoe Type Centerless Grinding Machine

In shoe type centerless grinding, two steel shoes replace the blade and the regulation wheel. The front shoe supports the work piece, while the rear shoe replaces the regulation wheel. Grinding geometry is similar to wheel type centerless grinding, but this setup allows grinding of special surfaces at one pass.

This principle is used for many applications like outer groove grinding of bearings, grinding of crank shafts, profile OD grinding, grinding of inner gears or grinding of hub unit shafts.

Surface Grinding Machines

For manufacturing of high precision metal parts and in order to achieve very good flatness, parallelism and surface finish, disk surface grinding machines are used. Important properties for those machines are precision, efficiency, rigidity, stability, stiffness and automation.

Surface grinding machines are available in several versions. The working piece can be fixed on a table while the horizontally rotating grinding wheel is moved over the part. This methode is simple and cost effective.

Single disk grinding machines use a rotary table to mount the parts while usually a vertical spindle grinding wheel is grinding the parts. On the same machine and using the same rotary table, also two spindles can be mounted, e.g. for coarse grinding and for fine grinding.

Double disk surface grinding machines use either horizontal or vertical spindles and the metal parts are ground same time from both sides. Many different types of part feeding and automation are available.
