Cam grinding demands free cutting wheels with good form holding abilities together with the ability to maintain tight surface finish tolerances. Both vitrified and resinoid bonded wheels are used, depending on the material used and surface finish required.
Production cam grinding is found in the automotive, aircraft, truck, shipbuilding, locomotive and farm equipment engine industry.
Two types of installations are found:
1) Dual cycle machines, which use rough and finish with one wheel specification: special high speed vitrified wheels are normally used in this case.
2) Two separate machines are used, one for roughing and one for finishing. Standard vitrified wheels are used for roughing and resinoid wheels are used for finishing.
Cam regrinding is found in engine rebuilding shops. The amount of material which must be removed is less than in original manufacture, but the same critical shape tolerances apply.
Hard cBN (cubic boron nitride) grinding wheels should be considered for production of camshafts, if your grinding machine is prepared for the usage of cBN wheels and if it has a dressing unit for thes wheels. Especially for grinding cams for car and truck diesel engines, cBN wheels are used frequently.

As most cam grinding machines are custom built to the part being ground, it is impossible to properly specify a wheel without certain information. Before ordering any cam wheel, be sure to accurately specify the wheel. The machine model and serial number are needed. Please specify also the actual spindle speed, roughing and finishing as well as the current specification of the grinding wheel in use.
The purpose of the dressing and truing is to restore the original cutting geometry and to correct the flatness and roundness of the grinding wheel. This is done in many cases by diamond dressers.
Grinding machines can be equipped with different grinding wheels. The grinding wheels can consist of aluminium oxide Al2O3, cubic boron nitride cBN or diamond. cBN and diamond grinding wheels are very hard and can be used for high precision grinding of very hard parts. The life time is very high. Diamond wheels have some limitation for grinding steel because of the solubility of carbon in iron.
The grain size of the abrasive material of a grinding wheel is determined by the mesh size of the sieve that is used for the selection of the material. The mesh size is therefore a measure of the roughness of the grinding wheel and determines the removal rate and the surface roughness of the workpiece after grinding.

Bonding of the abrasiv material can be vitrified, metallic or resin. Vitrified bonding is used frequently. High stock removal rates can be achieved and the rigidity allows high precision grinding. This bonding is not sensitive to water, acid, oil and it is not temperature sensitive either. Resin bonding is rather soft and is used to achieve very smooth surfaces. Metallic bonding is used for special purposes, e.g. for electrical discharge truing. Regulation and feed wheels use rubber bonding.
