Cylindrical grinding Wheels

Cylindrical grinding may include all outside diameter grinding, even though the finished workpiece is not a cylinder. The workpiece may be conical in shape or consist of a special form, ground with a wheel dressed into a specific shape. Wheels in this category are used for grinding works which are held between centres and chucks.

Requirements in cylindrical grinding vary from fast stock removal, where rough finish is allowed, to ultra-smooth finishing, which is called mirror finish. Wheels with coarse grit and rough dressing are suitable for fast stock removal. In contrast, wheel with fine grit and smooth dressing result in smooth finish. Hard material requires softer wheels than soft material in the same wheel dimension. Workpieces with small diameters or sharp corners, finer grit is more important than harder grade. Workpieces with wide shoulders require softer and coarser wheels, particularly when the workpiece is hardened.

Roll grinding Wheels

Rolls are widely used on rolling machines in steel mills, paper mills, aluminum, brass, copper industries, etc. Roll grinding wheels are used to regrind the rolls. The operation is similar to cylindrical grinding, except the workpiece is large and geometry and highly accurate surface finishes are required.

  • Above are recommendations in general. Because roll grinding is a kind of precision grinding, it requires great grinding experiences and skills. One must consider the material of workpiece, machine condition and speeds etc., to have a correct choice of grinding wheel specification.
  • Usually roll grinding machines allow for wheel speed changes. General max. operating speeds for vitrified wheels are 2000 m/min (35 m/s), and for resinoid wheels are 3000 m/min (50 m/s).

Dressing and truing of grinding wheels

The purpose of the dressing and truing is to restore the original cutting geometry and to correct the flatness and roundness of the grinding wheel. This is done in many cases by diamond dressers.

Abrasives, grinding wheel material

Grinding machines can be equipped with different grinding wheels. The grinding wheels can consist of aluminium oxide Al2O3, cubic boron nitride cBN or diamond. cBN and diamond grinding wheels are very hard and can be used for high precision grinding of very hard parts. The life time is very high. Diamond wheels have some limitation for grinding steel because of the solubility of carbon in iron.

Mesh size

The grain size of the abrasive material of a grinding wheel is determined by the mesh size of the sieve that is used for the selection of the material. The mesh size is therefore a measure of the roughness of the grinding wheel and determines the removal rate and the surface roughness of the workpiece after grinding.

Bonding

Bonding of the abrasiv material can be vitrified, metallic or resin. Vitrified bonding is used frequently. High stock removal rates can be achieved and the rigidity allows high precision grinding. This bonding is not sensitive to water, acid, oil and it is not temperature sensitive either. Resin bonding is rather soft and is used to achieve very smooth surfaces. Metallic bonding is used for special purposes, e.g. for electrical discharge truing. Regulation and feed wheels use rubber bonding.
