Gaz exothermique

Exothermic gas or exo gas is used for the thermal treatment of metals as a protective gas. It is the cheapest shielding gas available and can be generated in an exothermic gas generator by burning natural gas, consisting mainly of methane or other hydrocarbons with some lack of oxygen. This process is taking place under heat emission and is therefore exotherm.
        CH4  +  O2  →  CO2  +  2 H2
Mainly carbon dioxide and hydrogen are generated. Depending on the mixing ratio of gases and reaction conditions, carbon monoxide is also formed by incomplete burning of some methane as well as water, generated by partial oxidation of hydrogen. The content of moisture can be reduced by secondary treatment of the endothermic gas. Small amounts of unburnt hydrocarbons can be available also. Nitrogen, coming from the air used for burning the methane is contained in larger amounts of course, and its content can be futher increased in order to reduce the percentage of hydrogen.
Hydrogen is a reducing agent and avoids oxidation or corrosion of metal surfaces in a furnace. It has to be taken into account however, that carbon dioxid as well as hydrogen reduce the carbon content of steel. Carbon dioxide reacts with carbon under formation of carbon monoxide and water can react with carbon at high temperatur under formation of carbon monoxide and hydrogen. Exothermic gas is therefore used mainly for the thermal treatment, annealing, hardening and sintering of low carbon steel.
