Mitsui Kinzoku TKR Division, Company Overview

Mitsui Kinzoku, TKR is one of the major refractory manufacturers in Japan. Mitsui Kinzoku, TKR has greatly contributed to the economic growth of Japan by supplying their high quality products to various industries such as steel, non-ferrous metal, light metal, chemistry, electric parts and Pottery-Porcelain.

Mitsui Kinzoku, TKR offers a full range of kiln furnitures for firing electronic and magnetic ceramics and lining bricks for high temperature furnaces as well as special refractories.

The materials and forming process are determinded by consideration of the end use, properties, design, and complexities. Using high-purity artificial raw materials, all of the Mitsui Kinzoku, TKR products are formed into various kinds of shapes including high complex by vibration press, hydraulic press, casting or other own specific fabrication process and then fired at high temperature.

History of the company
1954 Tokyo Kokyu Rozai (TKR) Co., Ltd. (Original company of TKR Division) was established with a capital of 3 million yen, and started manufacturing super refractrories such as silicon carbide (SiC) and fused alumina based refractrories.
1957 Mitsui Mining & Smelting Co., Ltd. (Mitsui Kinzoku) had imported SiC refractories for zinc distillation furnaces from U.S.A. Mitsui Kinzoku succeeded in developing SiC refractories, and has planned to launch the refractories. As TKR also had planned to build a plant, both parties agreed to affiliation in 1957. After that, Mitsui Kinzoku joined management of TKR. TKR has been developing kiln furniture for ceramics (china, sanitary ware, tiles etc.) based on technologies of super refractrories (SiC) and fused alumina refractrories since its established.
1961 TKR entered into technical co-operation with Carborundum Co., Ltd. who was a leader in the refractory industry. Since that, TKR and Carborundum had had strong co-operation in development and technical and sales aspects.
1970 Mitsui Kinzoku, Miike refractory plant was renamed TKR Omuta plant. TKR has been enhancing the manufacturing capacity in response to increasing demand.
1971 TKR developed an outstanding filtration system "Metalofilter" for molten aluminium. TKR has taken out a patent on Metalofilter in 9 countries. Metalofilter has contributed to obtain high quality aluminium products. TKR started developing kiln furniture for advanced ceramics (dielectric, piezoelectric ceramics, insulator and ferrite). As a result, TKR has had unique technologies and a large market share in these fields.
1974 "Rare Super" tiles was used at the floor of steel smelting furnace. As a result, Rare Super tiles have been realized as a superior material compared to other refractories.
1976 TKR was awarded the Nikkan Kogyo Shirnhan prize for the development of wear resistant materials. TKR products have been exported to not only Korea, Taiwan and Southeast Asia, but also to North America and Europe by virtue of the superior performance. The exportations have been expanding. The outstanding technologies have been exported to some countries, and contributed to the economic growth. TKR has collaborated with public research centres and universities in developing oxide ceramics and non-oxide such as carbide, nitride and boride ceramics.
1990 Mitsui Kinzoku took over TKR to branch out into the ceramic business as a diversification of the business. TKR was renamed Mitsui Kinzoku, TKR Division.
1993 "Metaloflor" was awarded the technical prize on the first Japan Light Metal Association Award. TKR has marketed silicon nitride advanced ceramics "Hi-Cera SN" and titaniumdiboride advanced ceramics "Hi-Cera TB" for molten aluminium applications as a result of TKR's original development. Hi-Cera SN series products such as heater tubes and protection tubes have satisfied customers with the exceptional corrosion resistance, heat shock resistance and other properties.
1996 Omuta plant installed new facilities (high tall furnace and automated forming machine) to meet customer's demand.
1999 Crystec becomes in cooperation with Iwatani the European representative.

Iwatani

In Europe Iwatani and Crystec cooperate with Mitsui Kinzoku TKR department, in order to sell high temperature resistant refractories. Iwatani is a big organization with offices all over the world and a headquarter in Tokyo. Main activities are in the business fields of gas, energy and communication. This includes not only the material, but also related equipment. Special furnace accessories are supported in cooperation with companies that are specialized on these markets. In Europe one customer interface for these products is Crystec Technology Trading GmbH. We work close with TKR and Iwatani International Corporation (Europe) GmbH in Düsseldorf.

TKRs products are:

ALO SUPER
Material: Sintered or fused alumina refractory fired at high temperature.
Features: Spalling resistance, high strength at high temperature. Chemically stable in various atmosphere. Low contamination to fired products.
Applications: Kiln furniture (setter tiles, saggers, supports, etc.), for electric parts, lining of high temperature furnaces.

MULLO SUPER
Material: Fused mullite refractory fired at high temperature.
Features: High strength at high temperature, excellent creep resistance, chemical stability.
Applications: Kiln furniture (sagger, posts, supports, etc.), lining of high temperature furnaces.

NEO SUPER
Material: Silicate bonded silicon carbide refractory.
Features: Excellent anti-activity, high thermal conductivity, high strength at high temperature, heat shock resistance and wear resistance.
Applications: Kiln furniture (setter tiles, saggers, supports, etc.), lining of melting and holding furnaces for non-ferrous metal, and of cyclones.

RARE SUPER
Material: Silicon nitride bonded silicon carbide refractory.
Features: More excellent physical and chemical properties than NEO SUPER.
Applications: Kiln furniture (setter tiles, saggers, supports, etc.), lining of furnaces, tap holes and radiant tubes for molten aluminium, slurry transfer pipes and impeller. Complex shapes can be available.

OTHER REFRACTORIES

Features: Excellent heat shock resistance, corrosion resistance to molten aluminium alloys, high wear resistance.
Applications: Protection tubes, heater tubes, degasing rotor shaft and other parts in treating molten aluminium.
HI-CERA SN, TB
Material: TiB2 and TiCN based advanced ceramics.
Features: High hardness, wear resistance and electronic conductivity.
Applications: Any applications required durability, and level sensors for molten aluminium alloys.

METALOFILTER, METALOCLEAN TS
Recent aluminium industries have strongly been required of "lighter, thinner, stronger and high workable products". To meet such requirements, it is necessary to get rid of non-metallic inclusions and hydrogen gas in molten aluminium alloys.
METALOFILTER can remove not only big but also small inclusions in molten aluminium. METALOCLEAN TS can remove hydrogen gas. Our systems are dispensable to aluminium casting. We have obtained many achievements.
